Howes Diesel Treat Anti-Gel & Conditioner
The winter fuel insurance that lives in the side box. One 64 oz bottle treats up to 320 gallons.
Updated October 15, 2026
Diesel starts thickening around 34°F and can fully gel at 15°F — plugged filters, a dead truck, and a tow bill. One bottle of preventive anti-gel per winter is the cheapest insurance on the truck, and this is the one the fuel islands have stocked for decades.
How it works
Pour it in before you fuel
1Dose it
1 oz per 5 gallons of diesel above 0°F — double the dose below 0°F. Pour it in before fueling so the fuel mixes it for you.
Stretch one bottle
A single 64 oz bottle treats up to 320 gallons above freezing. At typical truck fill-ups, one bottle covers roughly two full tanks.
Keep using it
It's a conditioner, not just an anti-gel — lubricity, water removal, and injector cleaning keep working all year, not only in January.
Why anti-gel matters before the first cold snap
Today's ULSD fuel waxes up faster than the old stuff. Around 34°F the wax crystals start forming; by 15°F untreated fuel can gel solid enough to starve the engine. The failure mode is always the same: filters plug, the truck stumbles, and you're on the shoulder waiting on a tow.
Howes backs the bottle with a guarantee most additive makers won't touch: "You go, or we pay the tow." That's the whole pitch — preventive treatment, every fill-up, before the thermometer drops.

Buyer questions
What drivers ask before buying
How much Diesel Treat do I add per fill-up?
The bottle's rule is 1 oz per 5 gallons of diesel when it's above 0°F, and double that below 0°F. One 64 oz bottle treats up to 320 gallons above freezing — for a truck taking on 150 gallons at a time, that's roughly two full fill-ups per bottle.
Do I only use it in winter?
No. The anti-gel is the winter headline, but it's a conditioner year-round: it adds lubricity, demulsifies water out of the fuel, cleans injectors, and cuts smoking and rough idle. Winter is when it saves you; the rest of the year it just maintains the fuel system.
Is it safe for DPFs and modern emissions systems?
Yes — the manufacturer rates it particulate-filter friendly and warranty safe, and safe in all diesel and biodiesel blends up to B-20.
My fuel already gelled — will this fix it?
No, and that's the honest answer: Diesel Treat is preventive, not a rescue. For already-gelled fuel Howes makes Diesel Lifeline, their emergency reliquefier — no alcohol, no filter change needed. Buy Treat before the cold; keep Lifeline in mind for the morning it catches you anyway.
Why does 'no alcohol' matter in an anti-gel?
Alcohol-based additives can dry out seals and drag water through the system. Howes demulsifies water — pushes it out of the fuel — using no alcohol or harmful solvents, which is also why it stays safe for filters and warranties.
Here's the part that matters: anti-gel only works if it's in the tank before the cold hits. A bottle in the side box, dosed at every fill-up from October on, is the difference between a normal January and a tow bill.
You go, or we pay the tow — the only guarantee that matters in January.
